Don's Woodworking Pages - Miter Saw Table

This is the miter saw table/storage bench I built.  It replaced some steel shelves I was previously using (which I hated).  It took about a month and a half to build (mainly because my real job got in the way).  The design is a combination of several different designs I've seen or heard of.  I used the best of each one and combined them all together.  The dust collection is an idea I came up with while building it.  Amazingly, even with the flex and 90° elbows, the suction is very strong and catches a large amount of the dust coming off the saw.  The "catch box" helps a lot, as does the 2.5 inch hose coming off the top of the saw housing.  The top of the catch box comes off in case I need to make miter cuts.  The sides were built as to not interfere with making miters, including compounds.

I used cabinet grade birch plywood for the outside, drawer fronts and doors (wrapped in maple), and CDX plywood for the interior partitions, the top, and the stretchers.  The drawer boxes are made from baltic birch.  The top was finished off with 1/4 inch tempered hardboard and wrapped in maple.  The miter extensions are made with 3/4 inch lightweight MDF, edge banding, and more 3/4 inch CDX plywood.

Front view - completed 2x4 frame for the top.  Covered with 3/4" ply and topped with 1/4" hardboard. The top assembly.

The "stretchers" that run between the sides and middle dividers - 3/4" ply. CDX ply interior divider and cabinet grade ply exterior side. Back view of the carcass.

Front view of the carcass. All the parts for the drawer boxes.  Baltic birch in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2". The boxes all complete.

Installing the 28" full extension 100 pound capacity slides.  Notice the jig I built for aligning them. All the slides install (the right hand drawers are done and installed). Gage block I used for installing the slides onto the drawer boxes.

Top view of the saw showing the dust collection ports on either side and the "catch box". This is below the saw.  The 3 inch ports connect together to a single 4 inch port. Cabinet section has a pull out shelf and a half-width adjustable shelf.  Doors use 165° concealed hinges.

Small 5 inch deep drawer. Medium 12 inch deep drawer. Large 22 inch deep drawer.
